What to expect

  1. Heard, not judged.

Whatever brought you here, the consultation starts with your story, not a form. Nothing you say is too small, and nothing is too embarrassing. Nothing is judged here either: not your age, not your weight, not an earlier pregnancy, not what you tried before you came. If you would rather come alone, come alone. If you would rather bring your husband or your mother, bring them.

  2. Your results, in your language.

Every report is explained in the language you think in, until it makes sense. You leave knowing what was found, what it means for you, and what the next step is. A scan is not a verdict; it is information, and it is yours.

  3. No rush. No push.

Fertility care goes one step at a time, from the simplest thing that could work. A consultation here is allowed to end with "let us wait and see". It is also allowed to end with "let us not wait". You will be told which, and why.

What to expect at every visit.

Fertility

First, we conceive a plan.

We start with the simplest thing that could work.

  1. The first conversation.

Both of you, if you can. How long you have been trying, how your cycles run, what has happened before, what has already been tested. Bring every report you have; nothing is repeated without a reason.

  2. Finding the reason.

For you, a scan of the uterus and ovaries, explained on the screen as it is done, and a few hormone tests timed to your cycle. For him, a semen analysis, one of the most useful tests in the work-up, and often the one that is skipped. Most of the time this is enough to know what is going on.

  3. The simplest thing that could work.

Timing. A thyroid or a prolactin level put right. A modest change in weight. Tablets to help an egg release, followed by scans to see whether they did.

  4. IUI, when it fits.

Prepared sperm placed in the uterus at the right moment. It needs at least one open tube and an adequate count, and it is usually tried for a few cycles, not indefinitely.

  5. IVF, when it is the right answer.

Blocked tubes, a very low count, other steps that have not worked, or an age at which waiting loses more than it gains. IVF is planned and followed up here, with her as your doctor throughout. The laboratory stages, egg collection and embryo transfer, are done at a registered ART centre agreed with you before anything begins.

We do not give a percentage before the tests are done. After them, you will be told what your own numbers mean, in plain words.

Pregnancy

Expecting? Expect answers.

From the first positive test

Come in soon after a positive test. The first visit confirms and dates the pregnancy, and sets out what is checked and when: the blood tests, the scans, and the questions worth asking at each stage. Each scan is explained as it is done, and your visits are with the same doctor, who already knows your story.
